About iKOU

Who is iKOU?

!

iKOU Founders Paul and Naomi Whitfeld

iKOU is the brainchild of Paul & Naomi Whitfeld.
They are based in the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains, just outside of Sydney.
Self described "matching jig-saw pieces", their joint skills have resulted in a brand that reflects all of their passions.

Both keen travellers, their Global experiences have influenced their brand's culture in many ways.
iKOU first came from a desire to encourage that 'holiday feeling' during everyday life.. to turn your home into a sanctuary, and to take time out for yourself with home spa treatments.

Paul and Naomi's travels also created an awareness of the impact that business of any size has on the environment, people and animals. This prompted them to hand-make their own product, so that all manufacture would fit iKOU's philosophy and that they would know exactly what ingredients were utilised. They researched ethical options for production, purchasing of ingredients for their products, as well as fair trade and supporting charity groups.
Their desire was to create a business that was sustainable to all, and also the earth.

During the week, they hand produce iKOU products in their Blue Mountains studio, an inspiring and creative old factory surrounded by green grass and poplar trees.. During the weekends, it is quite common that you may even meet the Founders themselves in their Leura flagship store. They believe this is an important part of staying connected with what it's all about.. their customers.

Our "Culture":

!

iKOU: [ ik-oo ] Japanese verb: to rest, to relax, to restore...

iKOU is based in the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains, Australia.
We hand-make 100% Natural Bath & Body products, Natural Botanical Skin-Care, Candles and Herbal Teas.

iKOU’s philosophy is to live the real life...

- using pure, natural ingredients that are ethically sourced...
- being true to ourselves and others...
- treading lightly on our environment...
- creating a range that encourages its users to take the time to rest and relax and maintain equilibrium..

iKOU’s inspiration is Global Spa Culture.

For thousands of years, ancient spa rituals from around the world have held one integral element... they are derived from Nature.
iKOU continues this tradition today, bringing you spa culture, drawing inspiration from every corner of the globe, always using 100% PURE ingredients gathered directly from the Earth..

Animal Testing/Animal Products, Our Ethos:

!

As animal loving vegetarians iKOU Founders, Paul and Naomi, have a strong policy regarding the treatment and protection of all living things...

"It's been an incredible journey for us" says Naomi... "we always wanted to create a lifestyle of beauty and abundance while still being true to our own long held ethos of treading lightly on the Planet, Environment and the protection of animals..."

"All of our planning, purchasing and formulation decisions are made with the conscious choice to only include ingredients that do not involve the harm of animals. It is quite disturbing in researching to find that many 'Natural' products include ingredients like crushed beetles for colouring (called Carmine) of makeup, animal fats and oils from beautiful creatures like Emu's, in cleaning products, when there are cruelty-free options that in reality are more effective anyway."

All iKOU products live by this deeply ingrained ethos.

iKOU is a proud sponsor of the WSPA (Worldwide Society For Protection of Animals)

iKOU products are 100% vegetarian and almost all Vegan.

So choose iKOU and have a clear conscience...

iKOU is leading the way to a Greener Future in Australia...

!

At iKOU we are always on the lookout for ways to minimise our footprint on the Environment...

As the demand for our 100% Natural wax candles has grown so rapidly in the last year (we now export to several countries and have stockists in all States/Territories in Australia), we have taken an important step to offset all of the power needed to manufacture our incredible candles using Solar Energy. We also minimise waste by recycling all of our cardboard, and because we manufacture our products in-house there are very few "production miles" involved in the process, meaning our carbon footprint is reduced even furthur. Initiatives like using recycled materials for our shipping cartons, recycled newsprint and bio-degradable bubble wrap for wrapping in our warehouse also help to reduce waste and landfill.

We are also proud to announce the adoption of Carlos the Orangutan as a public face to raise awareness of ethical Palm Wax production.

All iKOU 100% Natural Wax Candles are made using environmentally sustainable Palm wax (Paraffin Free + Vegan + GM Free) sourced from certified organisations founded by the WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature). For more information regarding the plight of the Orangutan and the Rainforests of Asia, please email us: studio@ikou.com.au
